LANDSLIDE SUSCEPTIBILITY ASSESSMENT: SOIL MOISTURE MONITORING DATA PROCESSED BY AN AUTOMATIC PROCEDURE IN GIS FOR 3D DESCRIPTION OF THE SOIL SHEAR STRENGTH

Abstract. Slope stability is strongly influenced by soil hydraulic conditions. Considering rain-triggered shallow landslides, the can be markedly propagation of saturation front inside unsaturated zone. Soil shear strength varies in vadose zone depending on type and variations moisture. Monitoring done measuring volumetric water content using low-cost instrumentation, such as capacitive sensors that are easy to manage provide data near-real time. For a proper moisture assessment laboratory soil-specific calibration recommended. Knowing content, suction parameter estimated Water Retention Curve (WRC), consequently conditions evaluated. Several models already proposed for landslide susceptibility evaluation, also FOSS GIS environment. However, these do not usually consider conditions, even if it crucial, especially case landslides. A procedure allows estimate starting from monitoring (from sensor networks or satellite-derived map) here presented. Moreover, preliminary results relative study (i.e. Ceriana-Mainardo Italy) shown.
